Checking the map while mini-orienteering

Fingal's next event is our Autumn League event in Deer Park wood, Virginia, Co. Cavan, on Sunday, 18th November .

Take the M/N3 to Virginia, then take the R194 towards Ballyjamesduff, the left fork at the west end of the main street. After the turn to the rugby club and after crossing a bridge take the R195, left, towards Oldcastle. After about 1K take the left turn into the forest. Parking is in the forest. Drive slowly, watch out for runners crossing, and park as directed.

The regular 7 league courses will be available, as follows:

Note the Brown and Blue courses will have a 'map exchange'. The 2nd part of the course is printed on the reverse side.

The terrain is all mixed forest with coniferous and deciduous trees, both mature and newer growth. Although the planning has tried to avoid the worst undergrowth there are sections with brambles so gaiters are recommended, particularly for the Brown, Blue, Green, and Light Green courses.

The map scale is 1:7500 with 5M contours. The maps are printed on A4 waterproof paper.

Registration will be from 11.00 until 1.00 PM. Entry fees are €8 for adults, €5 for juniors, students, and OAPs. €20 for families of 2 adults and children under 18. The charge is per map so if juniors go together sharing a map they only need to pay one entry fee.

SportIdent SI timing will be used. SI cards may be hired for €2 if you don't have one. Don't forget to download when finished and return any rented SI card.

Teas and coffees will be available at the finish.

There will also be a cake sale. Donations will be accepted to support the Irish junior squad.

You are encouraged to bring your own mug/cup in the interest of reducing rubbish and our environmental impact. Please help us leave this beautiful forest as we found it.

The final event of the Fingal 2018 Scatter League in at Malahide Castle on Sunday, Sept 30th. (There's a Leinster league event at Clarabeg near Laragh in Wicklow on the 23rd.)

Registration will be from 11.00 AM with all runners starting at 12.00 or soon after.

The scatter league is best 3 out of 4 events so make sure you come along to score points.

Thanks to all who came on a lovely mild morning, especially the strong DUO contingent. Great to see an active student club with fresh members Thanks to Jean for planning, and the rest of the club for helping out.

Next Sunday's event is in Ardgillan Castle Demesne, between Skerries and Balbriggan. The registration will be in the upper car park on the right inside the gate. The start and finish will be a short walk to the right down the hill, near the playground. So you can't complain about having to run all the way back up the hill to the finish.

The format is the same as last Sunday, 20 cintrols, Long course, any 18, Medium any 14, and Short, any eight.

Registration will be from 11.00 AM with all runners starting at 12.00 or soon after.

The scatter league is best 3 out of 4 events so make sure you come along to score points.

The first event of the 2018 Fingal Scatter League is on next Sunday, Sept 2nd, in Saint Anne's Park, Raheny. The registration will be in the car park at the tennis courts on All Saints Road. It will be signposted from the Howth Road, and from the coast road at Watermill / Bull Island causway junction.

There will be 3 courses on offer, a Long, Medium and Short. Controls can be punched in any order. The number of controls to be punched on each course will be specified on the map, and announced at the start.

The Fingal scatter events are suitable for everyone, especially those new to orienteering. The format of these events is the same as last year. Registration is from 11.00, then all runners on each course start at the same time, at 12.00 or soon after.

There will be prizes at the final event for the best 3 out of the 4 events.

The 2nd and third events will be in DCU and Hamstead Park on Sept 9th and Ardgillan Park on Sept 16th.

The final event will be in either Malahide Castle or the National Sports Center on Sept. 30th.

The 2018 Irish Championships in Donegal was a great success. Everyone has complemented us on running the event. Everything on the weekend happened without any serious issue, and of course we were blessed with great weather. Planning had started after LOC13, and was an intense effort for over a year for the main team.

We would like to thank the people of Donegal for welcoming us to Donegal and for all the assistance we received. One of the reasons we decided to stage the event in Donegal was that Frank Ryan told us they had been so helpful and cooperative in 2009 and 2010, and they didn't disappoint

Finally thanks to all competitors who entered and took part in the event. It wouldn't have happened without you and you were all very cooperative and cheerful over the weekend. Entries exceeded our expectations. Thank you all for travelling, especially our overseas visitors who came from as far afield as Australia, Canada, and Siberia

There weren't many Fingal members getting to run in the Championships, but congratulation to those that did. We will be taking a well earned rest over the summer, well, some of us will be travelling to other competitions. We will be back in September to run our annual scatter series in the North Dublin parks.

2018 is a very important year for Fingal as we take on the biggest event in our history. We are hosting the 2018 Irish Championships on the May bank Holiday weekend. The event will be in Donegal, the venue of the very enjoyable 2009 Irish Championships and 2010 Irish 3-Day.

The Middle distance event will be at Barnsmore Windfarm on Saturday, May 5th

The Classic Long distance event will be at Tawnawully, Lough Eske, on Sunday, May 6th

The Relays will be at Finner sand dunes near Ballyshannon on Monday, May 7th

Sligo Orienteers are also holding the Irish Sprint championships at Sligo RTC on Friday, May 4th

Preparations are well under way, but we will still need all Fingal members to come and help out at the weekend, if possible. The Blue Stacks centre and hostel is booked for the weekend.

Unfortunately our Leinster League event we had planned for next Sunday, Oct 22nd at Castletown House has had to be cancelled. The OPW would not grant us permission. It looks like we will not get permission to hold an event at Castletown again, which is very hard to understand.

The next Fingal event is a Leinster League event in Castletown House, Celbridge, Co. Kildare on Sunday, October 22nd. There will be the usual 7 league courses available so something to suit all ages and levels of fitness. Details will be be here shortly. Castletown House demesne is a lovely area of open parkland beside the river liffey, with a section of tricky woodland behind the house. Castletown House itself is Irelands finest Georgian mansion well worth a visit after the event.

Thanks to all who came to support these events. We had nice weather for St. Anne's and Newbridge House, not so good for Malahide and Ardgillan. But we hope everyone enjoyed the events and will continue to come to our events and other orienteering events.

The league is for the best 3 out of 4 events so most places are still open for the final event at Newbridge House on Sunday 24th September. Hugh Cashel has wrapped up first prize on the mens long course, but 2nd and 3rd are still open between the Kearns brothers, Trevor Hodkinson, and Killian Brennan. The Womens Long is still to be decided between Eileen Young, Heather Woods, Marija Majina, the Donaghy sisters, and Svetlana Gatova.
On the Medium Male David Quinn has claimed first place, Glen Byrne needs to turn up to claim second.
On the Junior male medium Peter Elovsson has wrapped up 1st place, 2nd and 3rd are between his brother Marcus, Oscar Rowe, and Joseph Butterfield. On the Medium female Amelia Naughton, Sandra Velthuis, and Edith Bridcot will claim the prizes but the places are still to be decided. On the Junior Medium girls the favorite for 1st is Sinead Young, with Emily Rowe and Katya Gatova fighting for 2nd and 3rd.
On the Short course boys, Cian Wickham, Odhran Girvan, and Darragh Young should claim the prizes if they turn up and finish well, but any of the others could slip if they slip up. On the girls Fionnuala Rowe, Orla Young, and Sinead Kearns will claim the prizes if they turn up but the order is still in pay.
On the Short Others, it's all still open between Gabrielle King, Nicola Elovsson, Claire Walsh, and Lindie Naughton.

The 2017 Fingal Scatter series starts on Sunday 27th of August. As usual there are 4 events. This year they are all in parks in Dublin north city and county. The events are as follows.

These events are suitable for everyone, especially those new to orienteering. The format of these events is the same as least year. Registration is from 11.00, then all runners on each course start at the same time, at 12.00 or soon after. There will be 3 courses available, Long, Medium, and Short. Controls can be punched in any order. The number of controls to be punched on each course will be specified on the map, it may not be the same at each event. There will be prizes at the final event in Newbridge House for the best 3 out of the 4 events.

The Third event is in Malahide Castle Demesne. Registration will be on the left of the road from the main gate on the south side of the park towards the castle. By public transport you can get bus number 42 to Malahide Castle, or the DART to Malahide, then walk through the park to the car park.

There is also a family fun day in the park which you can check out after the event.

The Second event is in Ardgillan Park, between Skerries and Balbriggan. Registration will be in the car park on the right inside the gate. It is possible to get bus number 33 and get off on the coast road, cross into the park over the railway footbridge, then walk up through the park to the car park.

The First Event is in St. Anne's park in Raheny. The registration will be in the car park near the tennis courts on All Saints Road, on the north side of the park. If driving park in this car park. You can also get bus number 29a to All Saints Rd, or the DART to Raheny station.

Thanks to everyone who came to our 4 summer events. The weather was good for all 4 and they were all reasonably well attended. Bayside was a particulary interesting street event, with the narrow alleyways and small open areas providing a good sprint challenge.

Tomorrow evening's event, July 11th, is a street orienteering event in Bayside, North Dublin. Registration and the start is in Bayside Square, about 300 Meters from Bayside DART station. The event will be signposted from the DART station and from the coast road to Sutton/Howth. If coming from the city take the first left after FALKS LIGHTING shop.

There will be 2 courses available, LONG 4.5K and SHORT 2.3 K.  Climb is minimal. The event is on streets and some parkland. Bayside is an intricate are of streets and laneways. The courses will also pass under the railway to part of Baldoyle. Registration from 6.00 PM unbtil 7.30.  SI will be used. The controls will chained to trees lamposts fences etc, similar to Skerries.

Next Sunday's event, on the 2nd of July is our annual event at Dalgan Park. Dalgan Park is on the R147 between Navan and Dunshaughlin. If travelling from Navan the park is on the right hand side about 3 mile south. If travelling from Dublin take exit 7 on the M3 and then travel a mile north towards Navan. To avoid M3 toll take exit 5 and drive through Dunshaughlin. The event will be signposted from the R147 at the park entrance.
This is a come-and-try-it' event with two courses on offer:
Short course 3.5 km
Long course 6.8 km
The Short course is a buggy friendly course. Dalgan park is farmland so dogs are not allowed.

The following Tuesday, July 4th, we will have another street event in beautiful Skerries, winner of the Tidy Towns in 2016. Parking is at Skerries mills. The event will be signposted from the main roundabout at the entrance to Skerries after coming under the railway bridge. Registration will be from 6.00 PM until abou 7.30. Courses will close at 9.00 PM.
Three courses are on offer
Short 1.99k, 15 Controls
Medium 4.08k, 17 Controls
Long 6.18k, 21 Controls  (actual estimated distance via optimum route 8.5k)
The long and medium courses necessitates crossing some busy roads. The long course has been planned to take in some of the best views of Skerries. The short does not cross any busy roads and is doable by those with a buggy.
The maps are printed on waterproof paper. The map scale is 1:5000 and the map is aligned to magnetic north. Control descriptions will be available separately at registration. They will also be on the map. The short course will have English descriptions on the map. Otherwise descriptions will be in IOF symbolic format.
SportIdent timing will be used. SI cards will be available to rent at registration.
We hope to provide light refreshments of tea/coffee etc. Please remove all litter with you when you leave.
If you are bringing a group please let us know so that we can ensure adequate maps are available

The final summer event will be an evening street event in Bayside on Tuesday the 11th of July. The registration will be near Bayside DART station, off the coast road to Howth/Sutton. Details will follow next week.

Thanks to all who came to our the first summer event in Dunshaughlin. Numbers were a bit disappointing, not sure if it was because it was fathers day or the day was too hot for running for some. It certainly was hot running around the streets. Thanks to Per for planning good courses for street orienteering.

Thanks to all who came to our event in Deerpark, Virginia. Typical Irish weather, it was dry beforehand, then the rain and wind of storm Ewan hit and it poured until about 12.30. Then it stopped and the sun came out. While it was very unpleasant at the car park by the lake it wasn't bad once in the shelter of the woods. I think everyone enjoyed Dave's courses. Although Deerpark is small it has a lot of variety and is maturing. Hopefully the thinning will continue but it won't be clear felled.

The next Fingal Event is at Deerpark Wood, Virginia, Co. Cavan, next Sunday, Feb 226th. This wood is on the north side of Lough Ramor and has matured nicely since last used. The map has been updated by Pat Healy using Lidar data for the contours and vegetation.
Parking and registration will be at the car park by the lake east of the wood. Turn left in the middle of Virginia, if driving towards Cavan. Grid Reference N 602 871.

The next Fingal event is a Night Orienteering event. It will be in Tolka Valley Park on Saturday evening, Jan 28th.

The event will contain a mix of park and street orienteering. Start times between 18:00 and 19:00. Two courses, approximately 2.5km & 4.5km. Courses close at 20:30. SportIdent timing. The maps are pre-marked on waterproof paper.

Parking is in the Tolka Valley car park with capacity for twenty cars, signposted from Blanchardstown Centre roundabout and Corduff Road intersection. Event entry fees; €8 adults, €16 families, €5 students, OAPs, unwaged. SI rental: €2

For insurance reasons night events are only open to age classes M/W16 and above.

Closest public transport: bus 39/37 to the Blanchardstown Centre terminus and 5 min walk, or suburban train to Castleknock Station and 25 min walk.

Thanks to all who came to our table quiz in the Comet in Santry. We raised a significant amount to start the funding of our Irish Championships 2018. Happy Christmas to all and we look forward to enjoyable orienteering in 2017.

Thanks to all who came to our event in Rossmore. It was a lovely dry and mild day in the lovely forest, many sections which are maturing nicely. Thanks to the contingent from LVO who came to support the event. Numbers travelling from some of the Leinster clubs however were disappointing. It was a pity because it's getting more unusual to have an Irish event in a forest like this which is more typical of what is found in Britain and Europe.

Course Details

All welcome to take part

Rossmore is a mixed forest with drumlin hills typical of Monaghan, and a number of lakes between the hills. There is an extensive network of roads and paths in the forest. There are some areas of brambles, the planner has avoided the worst parts. Some felling has taken place since the last event.  Start and finish are adjacent to the car park.

Directions:
Grid Reference H 653 299. Take the N54 Clones road from Monaghan, then turn left about 2 K outside the town on the R189 to NewBliss. The entrance to Rossmore Forest Park is about 1K down this road on the left. There is no longer a parking charge at Rossmore. However there is a 1.9 M height restriction barrier at the entrance. The toilets near the car park should be open.

The maps are printed on waterproof paper. 
Entry €8 adults, €16 families, €4 juniors, €6 students, OAPs, unwaged.
Sterling cash will be accepted.

Start times 11.00 to 13.00, courses close at 15.00.

The next Fingal event is a Leinster League event in Rossmore Forest Park, Monaghan, on Sunday November 27th. We are also planning to have a training day on the Saturday before the event. This training will mainly be basic training aimed at beginners. Please contact Anyta or Bernie if interested in attending.

Congratulations to the league prizewinners, there were prizes for the first 3 in each category. Thanks to all who came to Ardgillan yesterday, and apologies that we were a bit caught out by the heavy shower at the time of the prizegiving. The third event of the Fingal 2016 scatter league will be in DCU and Hampstead Park, Glasnevin, on Sunday September 11th. Registration is from 11.00 until 12.00, with all runners starting at 12.00. Please come early to avoid a rush at registration. Registration will be in Hampstead Park, also known as Albert College park. It will be near the the small car park in the park. This car park is small and will fill up. There is more surface parking in DCU and surrounding streets. There is plenty of parking in the DCU multi storey car park, which is charged. DCU is also very accessible by public transport. Buses 4, 9, 11, 13, 90, 104 pass close to DCU.

Thanks to all who came to our summer events so far. The final event is in Skerries on Tuesday evening, July 12th.
The event will be based at Skerries Mill, Grid referance O 252 600 on Tuesday 12th July starting at 6pm. There will be signposts from the roundabout at the railway bridge on the R127 ,Dublin road, to the carpark.

The start is an easy walk from Skerries railway station.
The event will be an Urban race style, the map is 1:5000 , sprint standard, on waterproof A4 paper.
Skerries is a seaside town, with an old quater containing lots of nice laneways :-) The town is flat and competitors on the medium and long courses should expect to get their feet sandy. The tide will be in on Tuesday evening, so if the weather is nice bring your togs and brave the Irish sea afterwards.
Control descriptions will be on the map and also available at registration. The control descriptions for the short course will be in english while the remaining two courses will be IOF standard.
The courses on offer wll be
Short 3.1km 8 Controls
Medium 5.2km 11 controls
Long 9km 15 controls
The short course is 'child' friendly as it does not involve crossing any busy roads, the other two courses will both involve multiple busy road crossings.
The first starts will be at 6pm and the last will be at 7:30 with the event closing at 8:30. Please note the the carpark will close shortly afterwards!

Families €15
Hire of SI cards €2 per card.

The next Fingal event is a local event in Blackwater park, Navan, Co. Meath, on Sunday 12th June. All are welcome. Come along any time between 11.00 and 13.00. There will be 3 courses available, to suit all levels of fitness and experience. The long course will take in some of the streets outside the park.

That will be followed by what is now our annual June event in Dalgan Park, outside Navan on the old Dublin Road, on June 19th. It is also a local event suitable for all.

Following that, we will have 2 summer evening events on the 5th of July in St. Anne's Park, Raheny, and 12th July in Skerries, north Dublin. The Skerries will start near the beach so you can cool down with a swim afterwards.

Thanks to all who came to our event at Castletown House Demesne on Sunday. We had over 160 entrants, the largest attendance at one of our League events for a long time, perhaps since the first league event in Castletown. The fine weather obviously encouraged people to come out and enjoy the morning. Chris Slattery planned the courses and made use of the parkland, woods, and the housing estates, adding plenty of variety. Thanks to Chris and to Pat Farrelly of CNOC for controlling. Also to Bernie and Sarah for organizing, and to Alex, Dave, Anyta, Nicola, Ciaran, Tommy, and Gabrielle for helping out.

The next Fingal event is a Leinster League event at Castletown House, Celbridge, Co. Kildare. It's on Sunday February 28th. The regular 7 league courses will be available, Brown, Blue, Green, Red, Light Green, Orange, and Yellow. Course starts from 11.00 until 13.00. Courses are being planned by Chris Slattery, with Pat Farrelly of CNOC controlling for us. Parking will be in the main carpark of Castletown Demesne. Take exit 6 off the M4 and enter via the north entrance.

Thanks to all who came to our night event at the ALSAA sports complex at the airport, on a cold Saturday evening. The courses were trickier than expected in the dark, particularly around the pitch and put course. Thanks to Jean and Tommy for planning and organising it.
